When I was a kid, I always wanted to be some kind of night guard. I wanted to find jobs where I could work nights and have a reason to be up at odd hours. The best job I could think of for that was unloading trucks for supermarkets and restocking shelves. I read somewhere that every supermarket needs workers to come in during night time when there are no customers and unpack these huge trailers. It sounded like a lot of fun and didn't seem too hard. Good way to stay in shape and a great way to see the night.
I've always wanted to try flipping the diurnal cycle upside down; sleeping during the day and being awake at night. I think better at night. Even the air is different. You're more alive at night; I can't explain it any better. Its like you're more...you.
Now, as I get more frustrated by my job, I begin entertaining these fantasies again. Maybe I can be a night watchmen? These guys basically get paid to sit and do nothing. Sounds perfect. No annoying bosses. No responsibilities. The great thing about this is you get paid minimum wage while basically not having to do anything. You are essentially a life guard; you're being paid to occupy a certain position at night. I could bring a computer and program. I could write that musical I've always wanted to write. I could twiddle my thumbs. Or, I could do some contract work on the side, only if I wanted to.
With even a modest supplement to my income, I could still support myself reasonably well. I'm not talking extravagances like going out to eat, or medical insurance. But the basics. Enough money to live and not take shit from anyone.
During the day when I'm at my cube, I like to think about how it would be to quit my job and actually try making a go at this. I wonder if there are people who already live this kind of lifestyle and what they think about it?
